Palmo Inc. Loft Offices
On outgrowing their home office, Palmo Inc. identified a very long and narrow "sliver" building in the Cultural District for their new offices. The upper floor, chosen for its views, had long been unoccupied due to the single-exit code restrictions common to Pittsburgh's downtown area. P+A worked with the city to resolve the code issues — in the process helping spawn the Vacant Upper Floors and similar initiatives. The building's narrow footprint inspired a plan organized around the simple concept of making the corridor a wall of sliding doors in the manner of Japanese shoji screens. Access to light both natural and artificial was a prime consideration. The project achieves an elegant result that is at once economical, comfortable and flexible.
